Circumnavigation Expedition Malaspina 2010: Global Change and Biodiversity Exploration of the Global Ocean: Historical Research on the Impact of the Original Malaspina Expedition

A general feature of the corpus of Malaspinian studies is the Spanish dimension. There are only a few studies about the subject coming from America; a tiny number compared with the total amount of publications. The first objective of our research proposal is the study of the expedition regarding this unexplored facet: the American perspective about the expedition, particularly from areas such as Bolivia, Colombia, Chile, Ecuador, and Peru. Our first goal will be to study the ideological shift and the impact of the socio-cultural interactions promoted by the expedition in America. A second objective will be to analyze the scientific program of the expedition from an environmental perspective, that is, taking the scientific activity displayed by the spanish naturalists as a model to investigate the environmental impact associated to the understanding of nature and the exploitation of America’s resources at the end of the 18th century. A third objective will be to review the bio-historiography of A. Malaspina, and analyze the different studies he made during his life, after his great world-tour expedition.
